Prayer is necessary for our deliverance

Psalm
1 I will extol you, O Lord,
for you have drawn me up
and have not let my foes rejoice over me.
2 O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,
and you have healed me.
3 O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;
you restored me to life from among those who go
down to the pit.[a]
4 Sing praises to the Lord, O you his
saints,
and give thanks to his holy name.[b]
5 For his anger is but for a moment,
and his favor is for a lifetime.[c]
Weeping may tarry for the night,
but joy comes with the morning.
6 As for me, I said in my prosperity,
“I shall never be moved.”
7 By your favor, O Lord,
you made my mountain stand strong;
you hid your face;
I was dismayed.
8 To you, O Lord, I cry,
and to the Lord I plead for mercy:
9 “What profit is there in my death,[d]
if I go down to the pit?[e]
Will the dust praise you?
Will it tell of your faithfulness?
10 Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!
O Lord, be my helper!”
11 You have turned for me my mourning
into dancing;
you have loosed my sackcloth
and clothed me with gladness,
12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you
forever!
Sickness comes. We seek medical help. We turn to those we believe can help us the most. When do we turn to God? Long before medical science had developed, the psalmist prayed to God for help with some sickness or grave illness: "O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me, O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit" (Ps. 30:2-3). That is a divine physician whose healing power is fantastic!
It is God alone who is the great healer of Israel :"I am the Lord who heals you," said the Lord (Ex. 15:26). The Psalms show how fully God's people understood this as prayers were made for healing (see Ps. 107:17-20). When people were healed, they rejoiced (see b.21). Our psalmist proclaims, "You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sack cloth and clothed me with joy" (30:11).
Through it all, people of faith pray, Philip Melanchthon wrote that "prayer is always necessary for our deliverance." The examples of the Psalms "have been recorded so that we would believe we too will be heard." God heard the prayers of the psalmist for healing, and God hears our prayer for healing as well. God can work through medical science and all that helps human health. But if we keep our faith perspective, when illness comes, we recognize all healing ultimately comes from God and prayer is a necessary part of our healing and deliverance. Rejoice in joy!
Prayer Point: Pray for health -- for those you know and love; for those you do not know; for yourself. Make prayers for health a regular part of your prayer life.
